Contrary to common belief, football isn't always the lucrative industry that it is portrayed to be on TV and in the media. While kids grow up idolizing their favorite players and dream of one day becoming a professional footballer in hopes of living the millionnaire lifestyle they see on TV—many people don't realize what it actually entails to become a professional footballer and what life is actually like at the bottom of the football pyramid trying to reach the heights of success and chasing the 'big-money' contracts.

A lifestyle full of deception, cut-throat colleagues, external pressures, and often loneliness—being a professional footballer can often be a difficult work environment to ever feel stable in. A Maltese futsal coach who switched from 11-a-side in his 30s and never looked back—more touches, more problem-solving, and more chaos that he enjoys. He explains how futsal principles (small-sided overloads, rotations, space creation) have reshaped modern football, then unloads on the local scene: Swieqi United paused futsal and redirected funds; league rules and incentives are skewed, facilities are thin, and investor ROI is lousy. His fix: open the league for 3–5 years (loosen foreign-player limits, stop on-pitch quota puzzles), split into two divisions, and actually market the product with personalities and better production. He pushes hard for giving 17–19-year-olds real minutes, owns his “Marmite” coaching style, names his all-time Swieqi five, and hints his future won’t be with Swieqi—he’s looking for a progressive project and building a new business.

There is a problem in Malta with young promising players ending their careers early due to distractions, politics, and other unexpected obstacles that mentally affect teenagers and young adults. From being on the brink of debuting as a teenager for Balzan FC in the Premier League to dropping down the leagues and struggling to gain favour with the gaffer at Mqabba FC, Musu finally decided to leave the MFA leagues behind and has been enjoying life away from football since.

Despite the numerous setbacks Willy's elite mentality and faith in God kept him persevering regardless of what stood in his way. The Host 🎙

Danny de Abela-Borg is an English-born professional footballer and coach. Having grown up playing football his entire life and dreamt of one day making it as a footballer, he quickly found out at the age of 16 that football isn't as simple as being a good player.

When realizing how much politics interfere with the day-to-day running of a professional football club, Danny quickly began looking for a way to stay involved in the industry and change the perception of how football is looked at.

The podcast is his way of being able to shine a light on the darker side of football that people are likely to experience as they pursue their dreams and to raise awareness to younger aspiring footballers of the mistakes made and lessons learned along the way—which will prove valuable to any player about to take their first steps into the professional industry.

Danny currently still plays football professionally in Malta and, while he continues to ply his trade, is looking to grow his brand beyond just being a footballer.
